🍁 Postmenopausal Zest
The Energy You Thought You Lost
By C. Clark 🍁🍂
For most of my life, I never heard much about menopause. Back in the day, it wasn’t something women talked about—not with friends, not with family, and definitely not with doctors. The only thing I knew to expect were “hot flashes.” I figured they’d come and go, and that would be that.
But when the time came, I found myself wondering what on earth had happened to me. Somewhere between perimenopause and menopause, my energy seemed to vanish. I woke up tired. Most days, I didn’t want to do my hair or put on makeup. I didn’t even recognize myself. I wasn’t depressed exactly, but I wasn’t me either. The spark—the get-up-and-go that once defined me—had quietly slipped away.
Then, as time passed and my body began to settle into post-menopause, something unexpected happened. Slowly, quietly, that spark began to flicker again. I started to feel more like myself. One morning, while reading an article, I came across a phrase I had never heard before: “Postmenopausal Zest.”
That stopped me in my tracks.
What Is “Postmenopausal Zest”?
The term postmenopausal zest was coined by anthropologist Margaret Mead. She used it to describe the renewed vitality and confidence many women experience after menopause—a kind of second wind. It’s the stage when the emotional fog lifts, the hormonal roller coaster slows down, and a new sense of clarity and energy begins to emerge.
It’s not about returning to who you used to be—it’s about embracing who you’ve become. It’s a feeling of lightness, of finally understanding your body, and of rediscovering passions you may have set aside while managing everyone else’s needs. It’s the zest that comes when you realize this next phase of life can be about you.
How to Nurture and Increase That Zest
Here are a few ways to keep that renewed energy growing:
🍃 1. Move Your Body (Gently but Regularly): You don’t need a gym membership or a marathon goal—just movement that feels good. Walk outside. Dance in your living room. Try yoga or stretching in the morning. Movement helps wake up the body and release feel-good hormones that boost your mood and stamina.
☀️ 2. Get Sunlight and Nature Time: Spending even 15 minutes outdoors can reset your energy. The sun helps regulate your circadian rhythm, and fresh air clears your mind. For me, just sitting by a window with a cup of tea and the morning sun on my face feels like a recharge.
💗 3. Reclaim What You Enjoyed Before: Remember those things that used to make you you—music, art, reading, or learning something new? Revisit them. Postmenopausal zest is often about returning to your authentic self, the one that got buried under responsibilities and fatigue.
🌸 4. Practice Restorative Self-Care: Rest doesn’t mean doing nothing—it means doing what restores you. That might be journaling, gardening, or simply saying “no” more often. Give yourself permission to prioritize your energy.
🌿 5. Connect With Other Women: There’s something deeply healing about talking to women who understand what you’ve been through. Whether it’s through a local group or online community, sharing your story can validate your experience and remind you that you’re not alone.
🔥 6. Dream Again: This stage of life can be a blank canvas. Maybe there’s a book you want to write, a trip you’ve always dreamed of, or a new career path calling your name. Postmenopausal zest gives you the courage to try something new—without worrying so much about what others think.
Now, when I look in the mirror, I see a woman who’s been through something powerful. The fatigue and confusion were real, but so is this new energy rising from the ashes of it.
Postmenopausal zest isn’t about going back—it’s about moving forward with wisdom, grace, and a spark that’s uniquely yours. And that, my friends, is something worth celebrating. 🍁✨
5-Minute Zest Boosters
☀️ Step Outside: Stand in the sunlight for five minutes. Breathe deeply. Feel the warmth on your skin—it’s nature’s way of refilling your spirit.
🎶 Play a Favorite Song: Music from your younger years can instantly lift your mood and reconnect you with your inner spark. Dance, sway, or just close your eyes and smile.
💐 Freshen Your Space: Open a window, light a candle, or add a drop of essential oil to a diffuser. A fresh scent can reset your energy and shift your mindset.
🪞Say Something Kind to Yourself: Look in the mirror and say one encouraging thing. You’ve come through so much—acknowledge your strength and beauty right where you are.
🫖 Sip and Breathe: Make a warm cup of tea or lemon water. Sit quietly. With each sip, imagine your energy returning—steady, calm, and renewed.
